19 New-In Anti-Trend Items From H&M That Have My 57-Year-Old Mum and I Hooked
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: My mum is one of my biggest style inspirations. Having worked as a fashion buyer for over 30 years, my mum has her personal style nailed down to a tee, and I don't think I've ever seen her in an outfit that I don't immediately want to add to my own wardrobe. Practically everyone in my family—including my boyfriend—goes to her for style advice, and since we now both work in fashion, we are constantly messaging one another with links to pieces we love, from investment buys that are on our wish lists to high-street items that have caught our attention.
Despite an age gap of over 30 years, my mum and I rarely disagree on fashion, and we live by a "what's mine, is yours" approach when it comes to our closets. We might wear different dress sizes—she wears a size smaller than me and I'm about 2 inches taller—but, luckily, there are tons of pieces that we regularly swap, from denim that works with both of our body shapes to forever handbags, and evening-ready tops to holiday-ready dresses. I've even been known to steal a bikini or two from her before!
Just this morning, I sent her a bunch of links to some really expensive-looking, new-in H&M products that I loved for both of us, and she followed up with a few she'd spotted for our mutual wardrobe, too. What followed was a list of 19, anti-trend items that make up a uber-chic capsule wardrobe. One that both my mum and I will both be relying on throughout 2024. See our favourite H&M picks below...
My mum and I regularly share the contents of our wardrobes with one another, despite a more than 30-year age gap.

This cardigan comes in three colours, but we're both particularly fond of the navy.
A sweater vest is a transitional staple. Layer over shirts and dresses as the temperature cools, before wearing under blazers in the full-on winter.
Dress these trousers up with heels and a bandeau top or down with a tee and trainers.
Stripes are always in style, but this green hue gives the pattern a fresh update for autumn 2024.
I mean, just wow! Tap into the boho dress with this gorgeous, cornflower blue number.
This is from the brand's premium collection, but is still a fantastic price if you're looking to invest in a very chic jacket that will go with everything this season.
We both love a knitted dress this time of year. Wear with sandals and sunnies now before swapping in boots and a trench when it gets a touch colder.
Poppy joined the Who What Wear UK team as managing editor in 2022. After graduating from university with a degree in English literature, she worked for a number of print and digital publications, including Women's Health, The Times, Hello! and Marie Claire. In these roles she assisted the fashion teams with print content as well as digital shopping features, shoots and celebrity news.
Prior to Who What Wear, Poppy worked at SheerLuxe as the commercial content manager. There she oversaw all paid-for site content and inclusions, managed the visual assets and briefs for branded content, and ensured all content—whether editorial or commercial—was in line with overall brand guidelines and tone. She also supported the editorial team by looking after visual merchandising on site and reviewing the brand’s daily newsletters.
As WWW UK’s managing editor, Poppy spends most of her time looking after the content calendar and all output across the brand, in addition to working with contributors, supporting with social media planning, assisting with branded content and contributing to brand strategy. Poppy prides herself on being organised, and a keen eye for detail means she oversees the production of tentpole moments such as Who What Wear’s quarterly celebrity covers, the Wedding Issue, team shoots, events, industry-facing moments, gift guides and more. In addition to this, Poppy ensures processes across the brand are efficient and effective, and is always on the lookout for ways the team can work smarter, not harder! As someone who works behind the scenes (Poppy loves a spreadsheet!), you won’t find many articles by Poppy on site, but when you do there’s no doubt they will either be focused on dresses, handbags or classic high-street buys. Or better yet, all three!
Born and raised in London, Poppy is a true city girl. When she's not thinking about clothes (or raiding her mum’s wardrobe), Poppy fills her time walking along the river with her 11-year-old labradoodle, getting stuck in a good book and enjoying as many of the city’s amazing restaurants and bars as her purse will allow! Her favourite London spots are Caravel for dinner, the Ham Yard Hotel for a fancy pre-theatre drink, Daunt Books for a new read, 26Grains for breakfast and Coal Drop's Yard for a spot of shopping.
