I Consulted 11 Picky Fashion and Beauty Editors—These Were the Best Beauty Products We Tried in August
By now, you've probably surmised we test-drive a lot of beauty products here at Who What Wear. From nail polish and makeup to hair and skincare, we're eyebrow-deep in all things new, exciting, and wish list–worthy. That said, due to the number of products we come in contact with, we've become very nitpicky beauty consumers. Within seconds, we can tell if a new hair oil is too heavy, and we're quick to ignore a serum that yields disappointing results.
The good news? We can't wait to spread the word to all of our fellow beauty lovers (that's you!) when we do stumble upon a product we love. Therefore, we've decided gushing over our latest fave products should become a monthly ritual. You can expect a full report every 30 days or so that details the highlighters, hair wands, and overnight skincare saviors we've fallen head over heels for.
For the most part, we'll be covering buzzworthy launches, as those typically take up most of the action atop our product-filled desks, but we won't dismiss new-to-us products, either. Sometimes, our best discoveries are found on a friend's vanity or on someone's face at the bar (true story). Ahead are the best beauty products we tried in August! Grab your game face and wallet because you'll need both.

"I've been wearing makeup since high school (I won't count my Cotton Candy Lip Smacker lip gloss in middle school), and at the age of 31, I can honestly say I've only ever liked three eyebrow pencils. (For perspective, I've probably tried 50.) Ever since going red last year, it's been a struggle to find the perfect shade of pencil to use on my brows. I typically combine auburn with a soft brown hue, but so many auburn pencils come off way too golden and look completely unnatural. I thought I had come close to finding my perfect auburn pencil last year, but this new launch from Glossier has officially dethroned it. Not only is the color spot-on (I also use the Warm Brown shade), but the pencils are incredibly pigmented and easy to blend. The 2-in-1 custom tip shape is perfection, and I really lean on the flat edge to fill in my sparse areas."
"This is it. After years of blood, sweat (so much sweat!), and tears, I have finally found my ultimate natural deodorant. A publicist told me that Fulton & Roark's deodorants are the only ones that have ever worked for her, and while I was initially pessimistic (how many times have I heard THAT before) I am now in complete agreement. The scents are divine (who knew underarms could ever smell expensive), and I'm currently obsessed with Cloudland, Calle Ocho, Devil's Garden. These deodorants are aluminum-free, they don't "pill" and get all smeary as you apply, and they actually keep me smelling fresh for a full 24 hours."
"This deeply hydrating, color-protective hair mask from Ceremonia is officially the new MVP of my haircare routine. I try so many hair masks that either don't do anything or almost seem to make my hair look and feel worse. After years and years of bleaching, my strands still need lots of TLC until all of that old, previously bleached hair completely grows out and is chopped off. (Right now, that's about mid-lengths to ends for me.) I was losing so much hair mid-strand and down to breakage, and this is one of the only things that has worked to keep everything moisturized and glued together. Not to mention, it smells incredible. I like to use it as a pre-shampoo treatment; I'll wet my strands with a spray bottle at bedtime, cake this on, comb it through, braid it back, and go to sleep. When I wash my hair in the morning, it looks and feels almost unrecognizable."
"There's a brand new serum on the SkinCeuticals block, and I am obsessed. As someone who's dabbled with RHA filler to plump up fine lines and diffuse volume loss, I can say this glycan-rich serum is the next best thing to getting your face poked with a syringe. (Plus, it makes your skin looks so dewy and glass-like.) Unlike other hyaluronic acid serums on the market, this formula contains five strategic ingredients that work in harmony to noticeably plump and re-contour the skin. I've been using it each morning after my Silymarin CF ($182), and the results have been game-changing."
"It doesn't matter how many niche or indie fragrance brands pop onto the market, I'm of the firm belief that every single person should have an "icon" in their perfume collection. And, for me, it's always been Dior's J'adore. (Fun fact: Rihanna is the new face of the fragrance which is iconic in and of itself.) The original J'adore launched back in 1999, and there have been a slew of iterations debuted ever since. I'm partial to the newer take, L'Or, which is about as beautiful as a classic floral fragrance can get. Created by master perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, it effortlessly blends notes of orange blossom, jasmine grandiflorum and centifolia rose absolute for an intense, yet never oppressive, finish."
"Speaking of hair repair, this oil from Kérastase has become a new favorite, replacing an old standby that I'd been using since college. I've never been able to find a hair oil that imparts grease-free shine, ample hydration, and noticeable reparative properties in a single formula. Usually, I have to cocktail multiple oils and serums together which is A) annoying B) messy and C) expensive. I've been applying one pipette of this treatment to my mid-lengths and ends every other night or so, and the daily damage-induced hair fallout I was experiencing has pretty much vanished."
"This chic tinted balm from Jeanne Damas's beauty line might look dark and intimidating, but it imparts the absolute prettiest dose of natural-looking tint to your lips. French lips in a tube!"
"I'm sorry in advance to your credit card, but I'm convinced this eye-lifting concentrate from Noble Panacea is witchcraft, and I know without even seeing you, that your tired eyes—like mine—desperately need it. Each container contains 12 active doses which you're to apply two to three times a week whenever you're looking puffy and shadowy. I notice an instant lifting and tightening effect, but thanks the brand's OSMV™ Technology (amongst other ingredients like retinal), you'll notice lasting effects, as well."
Jamie Schneider, Senior Beauty Editor
"I recently ran out of body wash and grabbed this new summer launch from Nécessaire—and now I can’t believe I ever had a shower routine without it. First of all, the scent is GORGEOUS. It features olibanum (aka frankincense), fig leaf, vanilla, and lily of the valley for a subtly sweet, spicy aroma I find myself looking forward to each time I lather up. It’s also infused with vitamin C, vitamin E, niacinamide, and three powerful enzymes to brighten and gently buff the skin after a day of summer sweat."
"I’ve tested Olaplex’s Nourishing Hair Serum and loved its smoothing, shine-inducing benefits, but I wished the brand would offer something a little thicker for my perpetually thirsty curls. Well, here it is! The Moisturize & Mend Leave-In Conditioner delivers on every promise: It seals split ends, detangles like a dream, and it makes my strands appear noticeably hydrated. My hair is constantly screaming for moisture, especially after these few scorching months, and this formula is just what it needs to spring back to life."
"I recently attended a masterclass with Mario himself, during which he taught me how to *finally* apply setting powder without looking too cakey. (Tap the puff on the back of your hand before pressing the lingering powder into your skin—it will change your life.) But his new SurrealSkin Soft Setting Spray has been such a sleeper hit in my routine. It has an ultra-fine mist that brings my skin back to life post-powder, in a way that’s not too dewy or “wet,” if you’re hoping for a soft, cloud-skin look. It’s the only setting spray I’ll use for the foreseeable future."
"Rōz is my haircare safety net. I test so many shampoos, conditioners, masks, and treatments that my shower shelf is often a revolving door of the latest launches, but when I have an important event or am just craving a really good hair day, I know Rōz won’t fail me. So, I was pretty psyched to try the brand’s new hair mask, since I typically like to use buttery treatments in place of conditioner. I shouldn’t be surprised considering I clearly adore all of Rōz’s offerings, but this mask is truly incredible. It deeply hydrates, smells unreal, and gives me the effortless “undone” waves hairstylist Mara Roszak frequently fashions for her celebrity clients."
"Patrick Ta’s new foundation is some serious skin-smoothing magic. It supplies a soft, pore-blurring veil I can only compare to the Paris IG filter. The shades are also so on point; the first time I swatched shade 5 on my cheek, I couldn’t even tell where I had applied, which, for me, is the marker of a very good complexion product. As for the finish, it’s skin-like and dewy yet not too shiny. I recently wore it for my seven-hour (oops) engagement photoshoot, and it stayed immaculate the entire time."
Shawna Hudson, Associate Beauty Editor
"I have been (not so patiently) waiting for Osea to drop a body wash and finally, it's here. It didn't disappoint. This formula is smooth, creamy, has a lot of lather, and has a light natural fragrance that smells so good."
"I love all of Necessaire's body treatments and use something from the brand daily, but this newer offering is so good for dark spots and scars! I use this one a couple times a week and it works wonders—quickly!"
"I tried this recently based on a recommendation from an aesthetician and all I have to say is, wow. I always love a good cleansing oil, but this one stands out since it's lightweight and has a lot of glide but never breaks me out or feels heavy on the skin. My skin feels so soft after I use and and I love following with the brand's hydration mask."
Kaitlyn McLintock, Associate Beauty Editor
"ICYMI, heartleaf is a Korean skincare ingredient that can soothe everything from redness to acne and sun damage. As someone with dehydrated, sensitive, and redness-prone skin, I can't get enough of this toner. Unlike harsh, astringent toners of yesteryear, this one is hydrating and packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. My skin drinks it up, and over time, it's alleviated my dehydration and redness. I love it."
"I tried this blush at the behest of a friend who's truly and utterly obsessed with it. I like Rhode products, so I knew I'd probably like these blushes, but I didn't think I'd like them as much as I do. The formula is creamy and easy to swipe and blend with my fingers (although I usually use a dense powder brush). The shades are on point (I love combining the terracotta shade, Toasted Teddy, with the bright pink shade, Piggy). The finish is perfectly glowy. I'm obsessed."
"I already wrote a love letter to this brow gel, but I won't—no, can't—shut up about it. It's sweat and humidity-resistant, has an ultra-flexible formula, never flakes or smudges, and offers a 12-hour hold. Its spiky brush is what really sets it apart from other products on the market. Little, rubber bristles grab on to every brow hair, smoothing and shaping them into place. I literally use this every single day, without fail."
"Perfumes are a lot like relationships. You take to some scents instantly, and your love affair is hot and fiery until it burns out in a blink. Others are slow-burners. You might start out a little hesitant, but you familiarize yourself with it over time, and before you know it, you're in a committed relationship. That's what happened with this scent. TBH, I wasn't sure about it at first sniff. I liked the bright bergamot and mandarin notes, but there was something underneath that I wasn't sure about—perhaps the combo of fig, ambergris, and musk. But I kept coming back for more, and slowly but surely, it grew on me. Now, it's one of my favorite perfumes in my collections, and I wear it almost daily. I've learned to crave the fresh, earthy, and subtly sweet scent! (I also love another Korres perfume called Kyma. It smells like watermelon in the best way.)"
Emma Hughes, Associate Social Media Editor
"Once I found out that Sticky Dates was a mainstay in Love Island Leah Kateb's shower routine, I couldn't get it out of my head. While in Colorado for my cousin's wedding, I wandered into a Lush store, and thankfully they had just restocked this now-viral product. I immediately bought three—one for me and one for each of my cousins. Trust me when I say this shower gel is fit for your wedding day shower. It's like liquid gold."
"I'll admit that I was a little hesitant to try the Kylie Cosmetics Skin Tint. I'm super picky when it comes to complexion products—they have to feel lightweight with just enough coverage, can't pill, and can't look oily or greasy in any way. Trust me when I say that this skin tint rivals your current favorite option. I've been applying it with my hands or a damp beauty blender, and it looks flawless every time."
"Is anyone else super nostalgic for this lip product? I haven't owned it since I was a teenager and am so relieved that YSL never changed the scent (it smells like fresh watermelon to me). I recently wore the shade Pink Desire to my cousin's rehearsal dinner, and the shade was so vibrant and long-lasting, yet incredibly moisturizing and smooth. If I had to pick one lip product to bring to an event, this would be it."
Aniyah Morinia, Editor, Branded Content
"The shine on this lip oil is unmatched. The brand just launched a new shade, Happy and it just might be my favorite. It's the perfect nude and pairs so well with my brown lip liner."
"Applying bar soap to your face is typically a huge no-no in the beauty community, but for this one, I'd make an exception. In short, it does everything a typical bar soap can't. It brightens and cleanses without drying or stripping the skin. Brightening soaps tend to have a bleaching component that I avoid at all costs, so I can sleep peacefully knowing my skin isn't being bleached to achieve brightness. My dark spots are about to do a disappearing act, and I can't wait."
"I'd be lying if I said I always remember to wear primer. But now that I've been introduced to this new blurring primer from Refy, I can see myself refusing to skip this step. The blurring effect is so visible and I love that hyaluronic acid is a key ingredient. Refy always nails it in the innovation department, so naturally this metal applicator distributes just th right amount of product and feels amazing on the skin."
"Makeup By Mario just launched its first setting powder, and it did not disappoint. It really softens your look and blurs any imperfections without completely mattifying your face. Some setting powders can leave you looking a bit ghostly, but this one has such a skin-like finish. Bonus points for being able to take photos at night without any flashback."
"I'm such a huge fan of body oils because I love looking glowy and moisturized but I hate looking or feeling greasy. This is hands-down the best non-greasy body oil I've tried. It's safe to say I'll be purchasing the jumbo size next."
Emma Walsh, Associate Beauty Editor, Branded Content
"We all know that Vitamin C is a must-have for bright, glowy skin. I've spent years searching for one that was gentle enough for my sensitive skin, and I finally found it. This one from Bubble is only $19, and it makes my skin bright, even, and radiant with no irritation. I can't imagine my morning routine without it now."
"Even if I wasn't a Hailey Bieber fan, I would still be obsessed with this blush. The creamy formula blends in effortlessly and gives the most natural, dewy flush. I love the shade Sleepy Girl—a gorgeous soft mauve."
"Besides curling my eyelashes and swiping on a good mascara, my trick to making my eyes pop is white eyeliner. You don’t need a lot—I concentrate it on my outer lower lash line and gradually fade it in toward the center of my eye so it looks natural. I like the Satin Kajal Liner in Linen from Victoria Beckham Beauty—it glides on so easily and it's the perfect bright white shade. Try it and you'll see the difference!"
"I think this shine mist was created with me in mind. It's pink and smells like birthday cake, but it also tames down my frizz and flyaways and adds a pretty luster. I spritz it on after air-drying my hair, and my locks are shiny and smell delicious."
"Gourmand scents have stolen my heart, and Phlur's Heavy Cream and Caramel Skin are my current favorites. Right now I love Heavy Cream's silky vanilla lemon scent, but as we transition to fall I see myself reaching for Caramel Skin for its warm, musky profile."
"I’ve only recently learned about the importance of replenishing your electrolytes after exercising. I've been on a hot yoga kick recently, and this sweet, berry-flavored drink is exactly what I'm craving after my sweat sesh. It hydrates with essential minerals like magnesium, zinc, sodium, and potassium, and also gives me a boost of energy."
Anna LaPlaca, Senior Fashion Editor
"I usually break out after a lot of travel, but spritzing this every few hours on a long flight as well as every morning before I do any other skincare has helped immensely with keeping any breakouts at bay. I feel like the hypochlorous acid is killing off any bacteria that would lead to acne, and I know I'm not alone because the girlies have been making this little bottle go viral online."
"If you've had literally any conversion with me over the past four months, there's an 80% chance I've brought up this sunscreen in the conversation if we talked for long enough. I can't shut up about it and honestly never plan to. All I'll say is that the TikTok rave reviews are true: this product is worth every single penny of its $18 price tag, and then some. I've had so much sun exposure this summer but you'd honestly never know it because of the advanced filters that are only available from Korean skincare brands and it goes on like more of a moisturizer packed with microbiome-loving probiotics so I've honestly looked forward to applying it every morning."
"I just got back from a trip to Japan, and naturally filled up my suitcase with all the J-Beauty goodies I could manage to squeeze in. While I'm still making my way through what I brought home, I was immediately impressed with these rice-based sheet masks. I plopped one on while catching up on episodes of Emily in Paris and probably left it on for longer than I needed to. The result? Plump, firm, and hydrated skin that last all the way into when I woke up the next morning and into the following day. Now that I know they're sold on Amazon, the restock is only imminent."
"Not to be dramatic, but this serum has single handedly changed the overall tone and hydration levels of my skin—in record time, too. I've been using it consistently for about two weeks now in conjunction with the amazing cleanser and face mist and I've noticed leaps and bounds of progress in my skin more so than when I started using any other active like a retinol or BHA. The biggest difference I've noticed is that now I'm able to go with little to no makeup for the day, which is something I would have never been comfortable with before."
Eliza Huber, Senior Fashion Editor
"I recently tried out Westman Atelier for the first time, including a few blush sticks and the contour, and fell hard and fast for the Baby Cheeks blush stick in the shade Chouchette. It is so creamy yet lightweight, and can be blended in with my fingers. It looks so natural—like I'm a little bit flushed—and is gorgeous with a tiny bit of a tan."
"I never did anything with my brows until I got this pencil. The shape creates the most realistic lines and the shades are really natural."
"When I tell you that this is the best lip treatment on the planet, I'm not exaggerating. The metal applicator alone is enough to get me to invest in this product."
"I've been searching for a vitamin C serum that works for me and actually provides results for the last year, trying both low-cost and very high-cost options and coming up short. That is, until I started using this solution from Natura Bisse, one of my all-time favorite skincare brands. I feel so glowy whenever I use it and haven't reacted to it at all in the last month that I've had it in my morning routine."
Jasmine Fox-Suliaman, Fashion Editor
"Recently, I had to switch my curly hair routine because my texture was drier than usual, so I decided to test Cantu's coconut curling cream. I fell in love with the product instantly. First off, the product itself smells so good that I'll often have others commenting about how good my curls smell. Beyond the scent, what's great about this product is that it's not too heavy, so it doesn't weigh down my curls. Yet the formulation is hydrating enough that I've noticed less breakage over time, and my curls have gotten even bouncier since using it. It's been what my curly hair routine has been missing, without a doubt."
"While I know many people swear by red lipstick, I'm far too lazy to do the work to keep it looking good throughout the day. So I've been searching for a low-maintenance lip product that allows me to do as few touch-ups as possible—enter Patrick Ta's Major Volume Plumping Lip Gloss into the chat. Since buying this lip-plumping gloss in "Want Her," I've been wearing it non-stop; it's become a part of my everyday routine. What I love about this product is that it has the lightweight formation of a lip gloss, but the rich color lasts far longer on your lips than other traditional stains. Plus, it's the easiest way to have a red-lip moment without doing any heavy lifting, which is a win in my books."
"As someone who's worn the same scent for over five years, I wasn't open to switching until I saw a TikTok discussing how changing perfumes was the perfect way to shift your energy. While I felt inspired to make a change, it took me a while to find a scent that spoke to me as much as my previous one—until I tried Tom Ford's "Vanilla Sex" fragrance. The only way I can describe this perfume is that it is akin to the sensation of whispering into a new lover's ears in a loud room; suddenly, the world stops as you're enveloped in a sensuous mix of vanilla, sandalwood, and almond. It's an incredibly sultry perfume. Never have I encountered a fragrance that's as alluring as this scent is upon first sniff, not just by me but by others, too. Every time I've worn it, I've elicited many compliments from strangers. Besides being an instant compliment magnet, what sold me on this fragrance was that the quality formulation means that it lingers for a longer time—e.g., even after a seven-hour flight from London to New York, it was still quite strong. Honestly, I'm in a full-blown love affair with this scent; it's the love of my life right now."
Sierra Mayhew, Associate Fashion Editor
"I just swapped out my previous body lotion for this one and I was instantly impressed. A little goes a long way as it's extremely hydrating with just a small amount of product required. I love the fact that it's unscented because it's great for sensitive skin and I will definitely be reordering it."
"I hugged a friend recently and was in awe when I smelled her fragrance, it smelled like something I've smelled before yet it was slightly different... that's the beauty of the fact that perfumes smell different on everyone and this one most certainly does. I caught a whiff of Papier on a piece of paper at the Diptyque store and fell in love but smelling it on another person was a completely different experience. It smelt warm, welcoming and fresh—I was instantly convinced that I needed it in my life."
"Neom just opened a store on Bleecker Street in the West Village, which in my opinion is the perfect place for a store of any kind. I was obsessed with the experience of discovering mood-lifting aromas at every corner and fell most in love with the sleep fragrance. I've been spraying this pillow mist on my bed every morning and it's given me a very calming experience."
"You don't need foundation when you have this product. On my days off when I want more of a natural look, I've been just relying on this highlighter which I also use as a face primer to give my skin an instant glow. I love that it comes in a shade for every skintone and I need to try the pink tint next. While I use most highlighter on my brow and cheekbones, this one goes all over my face and I'm obsessed."
"I always have estheticians tell me to use more toner, but it can be hard for me to remember this step. Especially when it requires a cotton pad and a rest afterwards to make sure it soaks into the skin. There's no excuses or forgetting your toner when you have this one because the experience is seamless. First of all, it's a spray so it doesn't require the extra step of finding a cotton pad and dabbing it on, this makes it so much easier to travel with. It also feels like a cool mist which makes me want to spray it after washing my face. It's both hydrating and clarifying so naturally, I'm obsessed."
Nikki Chwatt, Associate Fashion Editor
"Before applying my makeup, I started spraying this clear and lightweight mist for a quick boost. It refreshes my face, adds moisture, and gives me a subtle glow."
"If you haven't heard, beef tallow skincare is the latest craze and I'm totally on board—so is my mom, aunt, and even my dad. We've all been obsessed with this unscented beef tallow balm because it gives our skin a significant amount of hydration, resulting in a healthy, glowing complexion. We've even all noticed improvements in our skin's texture."
"When it comes to makeup, there are two things I can't leave the house without putting on: mascara and blush. For the blush, my favorite is Westman Atelier's blush stick. It gives a "clean girl" look because the formula blends nicely into the skin, providing a natural flush to my cheeks. I also love to dab some on my lips for an even application."
